It’s a crime overseas, but not in Malaysia

YOURSAY | ‘Not to worry! The corruption happened in France, not in Malaysia.’

Two French execs charged with graft over Scorpene sale

Tulancheow: French investigators have charged two former top executives with corruption over alleged kickbacks from the 2002 sale of two Scorpene-class submarines to Malaysia, according to sources close to the long-running inquiry.

A case of corruption has taken place in France, but the then Malaysian defence minister’s name is involved. Surely this warrants the re-opening of an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Malaysia4All: Why is our prime minister implicated in another corruption scandal?

Could it be that this is another “foreign Christian conspiracy against our Muslim prime minister”, as Umno-BN is so fond of saying? Or, could there be a simpler answer?

Gaji Buta: I think I may have solved the conundrum we are facing. The answer lies with the theory of parallel universes.

In the first universe, which is seemingly experienced by outsiders, someone resembling our prime minister has committed all kinds of wrongs, and many nations are tracking his trail and charging those involved.

In the other universe, which is experienced by Malaysians, this person has done no wrong, money is clean, and no one can find anything wrong.

And when we access the Internet, we are taken into a wormhole that connects these two universes, and so we hear both versions.

If you don't believe me, just switch off your computer and you will only hear one version.

Oscar Kilo: Not to worry! The corruption happened in France, not in Malaysia. Same as the 1MDB case.

Enggang: So, it has now been implied by the French courts that our prime minister (then defence minister) allegedly accepted bribes. Yet, he claims to be clean and above board in all the dealings.

Has this piece of news been published in our mainstream media? I doubt it.

Poll: M'sian Twitter users losing interest in 1MDB

Mosquitobrain: Twitter users in Malaysia are showing declining interest in the 1MDB issue, according to pollster Politweet. The poll also noted that the decline is particularly significant in states outside Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

Actually, polls on tweets about 1MDB are irrelevant. It's a sheer waste of resources. More than 10 countries worldwide are investigating the 1MDB scandal, including the largest single action by the US Department of Justice’s Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative.

Back home, opposition lawmakers can keep talking about 1MDB scandals till the cows come home. What needs to be done, has been said and done.

Let the main culprits in 1MDB make hay while the sun still shines. God the Almighty is looking. With His guidance, the rakyat will punish the 1MDB wrongdoers and their collaborators heavily in the coming general election.

Mari Kita Ubah: It's not about Twitter users losing interest, it’s just that we’re getting fed up.

But I must clarify that this does not mean we are no longer interested, just that we are tired. However, our hearts are still eager to see that those involved pay for their crimes.

We are very determined to see those involved, including Malaysian Official 1 (MO1) and family, brought to justice. We are not losing interest.

Our support for change is always there - change for a brighter future, and a clean and fair government.

Thana55: There has been no fresh news of 1MDB, so it is no surprise that the number of tweets on the issue has declined.

You cannot extrapolate from these statistics that 1MDB is not a major issue confronting Umno-BN. People have already made up their minds. Additional tweets are redundant.

Drngsc: If the polls are correct (and that can be disputed), this is a very narrow interpretation of the data.

Besides what is concluded, it could be that tweets have gone down because people have made up their mind what to do with the 1MDB scandal.

The general election is due soon. Just vote out MO1. There is no point tweeting anymore. Take action now.

Kit Siang coy on whether he trusts Mahathir

OMG!: Structural issues bedevil Malaysian politics. For the first time since 1969/71 post-May 13th, the winds of change are blowing strongly.

The pendulum swings back. Bumi-centric policies have distorted society while thrusting millions upwards. They created a culture of corruption and entitlement and led to 1MDB.

Though 92, Mahathir is unique, and may be able to pull off the review and careful refining/dismantling of structural marginalisation that hampers high-income growth, once he wins back the support of the people, especially the Malay masses.

Clever Voter: DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang has remained coy when asked about former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's declaration that he is the number one person in Pakatan Harapan and whether he trusts him.

Hate them or fear them; the nation will continue to be in denial if we pretend all's well at the economic, political and social fronts.

While we don't expect perfect answers, the nation can ill-afford a government that lives on greed, lies and deception. The endless counts of corruption that has deprived our country of much-needed resources for the future have to stop.

This has to start with a government that is capable and willing to change. Setting the right tone has to come from a government that is willing to put the nation first.

While both elder politicians are past their prime, Mahathir and Lim offer an alternative and a choice. Competition is healthy. Perhaps, in retrospect, it is also a form of check and balance.
