A job seeker's attempt at finding a job by holding a cardboard sign detailing his qualifications and phone number, bore fruit when it was noticed by passersby who took pictures of him and posted them on social media.

Romdon Maseh, 45, was spotted holding the sign at an intersection at Seksyen 7, Shah Alam.

According to UiTM student Nur Tahirah Rosle, whose picture of Romdon went viral on Twitter, he was standing in the hot sun while holding the sign.

"I am looking for a job urgently. I am punctual, honest, respects confidentiality and prioritises employers' safety," the signboard reads.

Romdon, who said he was an STPM graduate, was seeking employment as a personal chauffeur.

His plight was also highlighted by Facebook user Syafiqah Damanhuri, who said Romdon told her he lost his job as a factory worker due to downsizing.

Malaysiakini could not reach Romdon on the phone number on the cardboard sign but Nur Tahirah said he had found a job.

His WhatsApp status reads: "Di tempat kerja" (at work).

“After contacting him last night, I am pleased to say that Romdon has found a job that will enable him to support his family and children,” said the 22-year-old when contacted by Malaysiakini.

“My social media has exploded, causing my twitter to crash as a result of this overwhelming love and support by our fellow Malaysians,” she added.

“I even had to mute my mentions as I was getting too many notifications,” she quipped.

Nur Tahirah's tweet was retweeted 28,800 retweets and 5,912 likes while Syafiqah's post garnered more than 9,000 shares and more than 7,000 likes.

Many reached out to Nur Tahirah to ask for his whereabouts to provide some form of aid and information of job openings.

Some have even managed to contact Romdon, asking for his bank details to offer some donation.

Others noted that the emblem on Romdon's T-shirt indicated that he might be a former commando.

“All in all, I am truly grateful and thankful for the overwhelming support that flowed from the hearts of Malaysians. This truly represents the unity and support we have for one another,” said Tahirah.

Some 37,699 people were retrenched last year of which 11,910 are plant and machine operators and assemblers, the Human Resources Ministry data shows.

This was followed by professionals, managers, technicians and associate professionals.

In 2015, 17,379 managers were retrenched followed by plant and machine operators and assemblers (4,213), technicians and associate professionals (3,926) and professionals (3,812).

In May 2017, the general unemployment rate in Malaysia stood at 3.4 percent.

In 2015, unemployment was at 3.1 percent while youth unemployment was about triple at 10.7 percent, Bank Negara data shows.

Unemployment hit all all-time high of 4.5 percent in 1999 due to the Asian financial crisis.
