With the launch of the 100th Smart Selangor bus, the Selangor government has earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records.

The launch of the 100th free bus unit is stated in an entry in the Malaysia Book of Records as the highest number of free bus services provided in the country.

A video recording by state government TV channel TV Selangor quoted Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali as saying that the 100th unit was to serve areas under the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MBSJ), due to the overwhelming response from Subang Jaya residents for the free bus service.

"(Selangor senior executive councillor) Teng Chang Khim told us how the programme, started two years ago, is now a very popular programme among the people of Selangor that it has received recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records.

"Teng said that Selangor is the only state in Malaysia which does this but I think Selangor might be the only state in the world which offers free bus services to the people in a particular state," Azmin said during the launch of the 100th bus at Sunway Pyramid on Sunday.

Teng, who holds the investment, industry and trade, small and medium industries and transport portfolio, was reported in July as saying that the free bus service had seen a drastic increase in the number of people commuting on the buses.

He was quoted by The Star as saying that 4.13 million commuters used the service in 2016, with the figure for the first six months of this year being 4.12 million.

The free bus service, which was started in July 2015 in Klang, Shah Alam and Subang Jaya, had 546,000 commuters by December 2015.

The air-conditioned buses come equipped with CCTVs and free Wi-Fi.
