BUDGET 2018 | Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today announced a higher special payment for civil servants.

Najib said civil servants will receive a total of RM1,500 in special payments.

The first payment of RM1,000 will come in January next year, while another RM500 will be paid during Hari Raya.

This is the highest since Budget 2016.

In the past two years, civil servants were granted special payments of RM1,000, the first half of which was paid in January and another half during Hari Raya.

The government shifted away from granting salary bonuses in favour of fixed "special payments" following a revenue shortage.

From 2011 to 2015, the government had paid out between half to one month's bonus on top of an additional RM500 payout to civil servants under the rank of Grade 54.

Najib said the payment was an appreciation for their loyalty.

"To the civil servants, the moment you have been waiting for is here.

"(This is) in appreciation for your loyalty, ladies and gentlemen, in shouldering the country's development and rendering services competently to the people," he said.

Najib said retirees will also receive special payments of RM750.

He added that RM500 will be paid in January next year, while another RM250 will be paid during Hari Raya.
