Dr M is Harapan's PM choice; Dr M's debt to Anwar; Johor Amanah's boycott

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Dr M is Harapan's PM choice

Pakatan Harapan formally named Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its candidate for prime minister during the Harapan convention.

The announcement was met with emotional moments with chants of "Hidup Tun" as well as "Reformasi" when PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was named as deputy prime ministerial candidate.

Mahathir also dismissed a poll which predicted that BN would likely win the 14th general election, describing it as "daydreaming".

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan described Mahathir's nomination as Harapan's prime ministerial candidate as a "shame" and "tragedy".

Dr M's debt to Anwar

Mahathir said he was indebted to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim for his willingness to forgive the past and accept him as the prime ministerial candidate.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng too echoed this, saying that the opposition will not forget Anwar.

Anwar, in a special message to the Harapan convention, said the opposition's coalition's reform agenda remains intact.

Mahathir said it will be up to Harapan to decide when Anwar should take over from him should the coalition capture federal power.

Johor Amanah's boycott

The Harapan convention was marred by a boycott by Johor Amanah, which was upset that it was only given two parliamentary seats to contest in Johor.

Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said the party's grassroots should be allowed to vent their dissatisfaction but expressed hope they will get more state seats in future negotiations.

In contrast, Bersatu will contest the lion's share of seats in Peninsular Malaysia.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the "politics of hatred" was detrimental to society.

The Prisons Department revealed that Anwar will be released two days earlier than scheduled, on June 8.
