Warisan expresses reservations on Sabah Harapan's '60-40' offer

Parti Warisan Sabah has expressed doubts on whether Sabah Pakatan Harapan's "60-40" offer is indeed legitimate.

In a press statement today, Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking said it was strange that the announcement was made by Sabah DAP leader Stephen Wong unilaterally.

"What surprises me is such offers should be discussed between Harapan and Warisan first, rather than announcing it unilaterally through the press.

"More so, it was done by just a deputy leader of the Sabah Harapan," he said.

Leiking added that it was not “wise or conducive for the opposition bloc” for such an announcement to be made, as Warisan has yet to see Harapan’s offer.

Wong (photo) had revealed the 60-40 formula to reporters earlier today, but only after a press conference by Harapan deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin in Kota Kinabalu today.

Wong told reporters that Harapan wanted Warisan to field candidates for 60 percent of the state seats in Sabah, while making way for Harapan in 60 percent of the parliamentary seats.

Attempts to seek comments from Sabah Harapan chairperson Christina Liew on the 60-40 formula has been unsuccessful.

Leiking said that if the "offer" was indeed legitimate, the devil would still be in the details.

For instance, he said Warisan wanted to know if the 60-40 formula also applied to urban or semi-urban seats, which he alluded that DAP would be laying claim to.

Leiking argued that Warisan was not a race-based party, and hence would welcome the 60-40 formula if it meant sharing these urban or semi-urban seats.

He added that a multitude of factors would nevertheless need to be taken into account when negotiating seats.

“We need to consider multiple factors such as the personality traits of the local leader of the party eyeing a particular seat, the party's machineries and political activities on the ground, and reception by the people at those areas, before coming to a conclusive decision.”

However, Leiking was full of praise for Sabah PKR and their leader Liew (photo), over their commitment towards the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and taking over of the state government.

"Their resolve, manner and method on leading Harapan is indeed respected by me and earned salute from all of us at Warisan," he said.

He urged Liew to verify if Wong's statement on the 60-40 formula was true, and expressed confidence that PKR and Warisan can work together towards a meaningful electoral pact.
