Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is waiting for “some sort of spark” to dissolve Parliament and pave the way for the 14th general election.

“You know, what the Malays say ilham (inspiration) on what is the best timing for us.

“As long as we do it within the ambit of the constitution. Let's see whether we have to wait until June (automatic dissolution) or earlier. We will see how things develop,” he told reporters after chairing the Umno Supreme Council meeting in Kuala Lumpur this evening.

The prime minister was asked on his reason for still not dissolving Parliament after he told the press conference that the Supreme Council was earlier briefed on how the ringgit had strengthened against the US dollar, Bursa Malaysia was at its highest in 24 years, the inflation rate had dropped and the unemployment rate was at four percent.

Najib, who is also Umno president, said the policies implemented by the government have shown encouraging results as well as boosted investor and consumer confidence.

“In general, we are satisfied with Umno and BN's situation compared to the opposition,” he added.

The prime minister said Umno are very much prepared for the elections, based on reports he has received from the party's various wins. 

"Our preparedness is at the highest (level) ever. Our efforts will continue until Parliament is dissolved," he said. 

In contrast, Najib claimed that the opposition appeared fragile based on recent developments, which has failed to inspire confidence in the people that they can safeguard the nation's stability and generate transformation.

Citing Bersatu as an example, he said the party did not appear to fulfil requirements in their own constitution, and did not hold annual meetings at the branch level before their national delegates meeting. 

"We don't know where these delegates come from or how they were chosen. 

"Meaning, the management of the party can be questioned... it gives an idea of whether they can undertake bigger responsibilities," he said.
