Two more remanded in Sabah railway graft probe

The Magistrate’s Court in Kota Kinabalu today ordered a five-day remand of two assistant engineers of the Sabah Railway Department to facilitate the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) probe into suspected graft in a state railway project.

The order was made by Magistrate Cindy McJuce Balitus for investigations to be carried out on the men, aged 38 and 36, who were the sixth and seventh suspects in the case, under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

When met by reporters outside the courtroom, MACC prosecuting officer Mohd Faliq Basirudin said the men were picked up from their office in Tanjung Aru to be questioned at the MACC office where they were subsequently arrested at about 9pm.

Mohd Faliq also said that four individuals, including a deputy director of the State Railway Department and a contractor, were released on bail today.

He said the contractor was released on a RM100,000 bail with RM20,000 deposited and the deputy director was released on a RM100,000 bail without any deposit while the other two were released on bail of RM100,000 and RM50,000 undeposited, respectively.

All four, who were arrested on Jan 22, were each allowed bail in two sureties and were ordered to report to the MACC office once a month.

The fifth suspect in the case is a 60-year-old contractor who was arrested on Jan 27 and whose remand ends tomorrow.

The three suspects who are employees of the State Railway Department were believed to have received more than RM3 million from the contractor since 2011.

MACC also reported that the agency had seized some RM1.6 million in cash and frozen RM5.3 million in accounts in several banks in connection with the case.
