The sentencing of PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli to 30 months' jail for blowing the whistle on alleged corruption shows the country needs to change its leadership, said jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

“Opposition figures including those in the Penang and Selangor governments are being targeted.

“Most disgraceful is how the young Rafizi Ramli is being targeted because it he had exposed the abuse of funds for (the National Feedlot project) to the family of a minister.

“The MACC makes a big fuss about investigating far and wide, but the case regarding the cows is covered up.

“Prior to this, (PKR vice president) Tian Chua faced similar action from the authorities," he said in a message on his official Facebook today.

Earlier this week, Rafizi and former Public Bank clerk Johari Mohamad received their sentence for leaking data from the bank accounts of National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd and its chairperson Mohd Salleh Ismail, who is the husband of Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

This follows the scandal surrounding funds for the feedlot project having been used to purchase, among others, luxury condominiums.

Anwar lamented his three years spent in prison had been in vain, as the country has not changed for the better.

“It was hoped my jailing would ease the economic burden of the people, that corruption would be under control, that the cruelty I faced would have positive result.

“Unfortunately, the cost of living continued to rise, the Goods & Services Tax continues to squeeze, corruption has festered, and we saw the alleged heist of 1MDB to the billions,” he said.

“And to shift public attention, issues of race and religion are raised again,” said Anwar, stressing the need for the people to support Pakatan Harapan to effect change.

Anwar is serving a jail sentence for a sodomy conviction, and is due to be released in June.
