Pro-LGBT HK singer's permit denied, concert called off

Hong Kong singer Denise Ho claimed that she has been denied the permit to hold her concert by the Malaysian authority because she was an "active supporter of the LGBT community".

As such, the pro-Umbrella Movement activist said her "Dear Self, Dear World" concert which was slated for April 4 in Kuala Lumpur had to be called off.

"After the co-organiser tried to negotiate for two weeks, we received an official phone notice the day before yesterday, saying that my permit to perform was not approved.

"According to my colleague who picked up the call, it was due to my role in the LGBT community. They (the authority) said it is 'because she is an active supporter of the LGBT community'.

"And the official letter was received today. No exact reason was given. It only says 'a number of issues need to be addressed if the artist is brought in for the performance in this country'," she said on her Facebook posting.

Ho, who has come out of the closet, is an avid supporter of the LGBT community.

In recent years, a number of pro-democracy Hong Kong activists had been barred from entering Malaysia, including Joshua Wong.

It is still unclear which authority in Malaysia declined Ho's application.

Malaysiakini is contacting several government departments, including immigration, for a response.
