Why single out Amanah for splitting Malay vote, asks Mat Sabu

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu has challenged PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s claim that the splinter party has split the Malay vote ahead of the coming polls.

Mohamad asked why only Amanah has been accused of doing so, when other Pakatan Harapan component parties like PKR and Bersatu are also pitted against Umno and PAS.

"When Amanah wants to fight against Umno and PAS we are accused of splitting the Malays. Are PKR and Bersatu considered as splitting the Malays as well, since they are also against Umno and PAS?

“Why is it when PAS announced it would contest in the Permatang Pauh seat, currently held by PKR, it was not considered as leading to a split among the Malays?" he asked in a statement today.

In an interview with Mingguan Malaysia earlier today, Hadi (photo) claimed that Amanah’s splitting of the Malay vote would pave the way for an Umno victory in the 14th general election.

"If Amanah really wants to go up against Umno, why does it want to contest in PAS' traditional seats?" Hadi had asked.

Amanah will be contesting in at least 27 parliamentary seats, the majority of which are seats currently held by PAS.

Mohamad contended, however, that his party and the Harapan coalition have a bigger agenda in the polls, namely to reform the country's institutions.

"As such, we vow to fight against Umno-BN as well as their allies in the upcoming general election."

The former PAS leader said that his party does not have any consensus with PAS, and as such will contest in any seat that has been agreed upon by Harapan.
