GE14 | SUPP president Dr Sim Kui Hian has come under fire from Sarawak Pakatan Harapan leaders for ridiculing DAP’s concession to contest under the PKR flag in the 14th general election.

Earlier today, Sim said that DAP has now “disappeared” after 53 years.

“So, DAP sudah hilang (has disappeared) after so many years. After 50 years, they hilang, they start joining PKR,” he had told reporters at the KD Sri Indera Sakti open day in Kuching today.

Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad had announced that the coalition would be using the PKR 'eye' symbol as its common logo in the Peninsula at a rally in Pasir Gudang last night.

Sarawak Harapan leaders took issue with Sim’s statement, criticising him for his “ignorance and “arrogance.”

According to PKR Wanita national vice-president Voon Shiak Ni, the decision to use the PKR logo has sent shivers down Sim's spine.

“I respect him as a person, but his statement ridiculing DAP for using the PKR logo is a manifestation of his arrogance and lack of professionalism in political engagement with the opposition.

She said the DAP has sacrificed greatly in not flying its ‘rocket’ flag for GE14.

“For DAP to sacrifice the usage of their 50-year-old logo is a gesture of the highest order and gracious virtue. It is a sacrifice for the people of Malaysia, for unity of the people and strength for victory against a difficult and callous regime.

“Pointedly, I am telling Sim not to resort to tactics like shaming others, because philosophically, a great person does not ridicule others, so that he could look great in the eyes of the masses,” she added.

DAP Pending assemblyperson Violet Yong (photo), meanwhile, said Sim was badmouthing DAP for its own sake, while being ignorant of the facts.  

“His statement only makes him look like a fool because his party, SUPP, was the one that has abandoned its own party logo for the past 55 years.”

Yong said the SUPP had failed to use its own party symbol in the past, whether for state or parliamentary elections.

“Sim should know that he is in a glass house, and should clean up his own house before ridiculing others.

“Can he first tell the public why he is not using his own party logo to contest the elections?” she asked.

The sentiment was echoed by Dr Kelvin Yii, the special assistant to Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen.

“The irony is that even SUPP does not contest with its own logo, but depends on the BN logo for their survival, especially to gain Malay and Bumiputera votes."

Yii pointed out that in DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s announcement to ‘rest’ the rocket logo, he mentioned that Sabah and Sarawak need not follow suit, as they could make their own decision.

“I would also like to remind Sim that we also have the autonomy to determine our own candidates and also decide on our seats, unlike BN which needs to get approval from Umno for everything,” he added.

DAP Sarawak is expected to make an announcement next week under which logo they will be contesting in GE14.
