MCKIP not closed to local workers, says Malay business group

There are about 1,200 local workers and only 200 Chinese workers working at Alliance Steel (M) Sdn Bhd, the first company operating at the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP) in Gebeng.

Pahang branch Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM) president Yusri Yusof said a visit by 200 representatives of the state government as well as government agencies and local communities to the industrial site on Monday, found that the majority of Malaysian workers at the plant were Malays with wages ranging from RM3,000 to RM4,000 per month.

“I have met and talked to six of them, both men and women, and they told me they were satisfied with their current jobs at Alliance Steel.

“In terms of work, they said they did not face any obstacles. According to them, their workplace and accommodation are very comfortable. There is no problem in terms of food as there is a canteen operated by Malays,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

The visit, he said, dismissed allegations by some quarters, especially the opposition who claimed that the 1,214-hectare MCKIP project only employed foreign workers instead of local people.

He said MCKIP management also told the visitors that more than 1,000 jobs would be made available for locals next week.
