GE14 | Prominent banker Nazir Razak says he finds the Election Commission's (EC) decision not to accord accreditation to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to observe next month's poll puzzling.

In an Instagram post uploaded today, Nazir, who is the brother of caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak said he hoped there was a good explanation behind the move, as it is pertinent that the Malaysian people possess full confidence in the voting process.

"I don't understand this & hope there is a good explanation. There must be every effort made to 1) encourage and enable everyone to vote and 2) ensure rakyat's total confidence in the ballot process," his post read.

As of 12.30pm, the post has garnered over 1,000 likes and over 70 comments.

As with most of his postings on social media that touch on national issues, many of those who commented called on Nazir to personally relay the message to his older brother.

Nazir was referring to the statement by Suhakam which stated that the EC had rejected its bid to be accredited as an election observer.

While Suhakam said it could not comprehend the decision to exclude them while international observers have been invited during the polls, it nonetheless vowed to continue monitoring the 14th general election.

The EC’s decision also invited rebuke from opposition parties and electoral watchdog Bersih, which called on the EC to make clear its reasons for rejecting Suhakam, which was established by Malaysia's own Parliament.
