Time to end one-party dominance: Ex-CM Tsu Koon tells Penangites

Vijay47: You surprise me, former Penang chief minister Koh Tsu Koon. I had always believed that where intelligence was concerned, you were a mere one step above or below the likes of BN leaders Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Salleh Said Keruak, Liow Tiong Lai, S Vell Paari, or even caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak himself.

But it now appears that flashes of wisdom do come your way, not too often but at least once in a while. You took the words out of my mouth when you urged an end to one-party dominance. I fully agree.

This vision is exactly what Pakatan Harapan is committed to and should, God willing, our prayers be answered on May 9, it would mean the end of Umno and its lackeys which include MCA, MIC, and especially you and your Gerakan.

It would mean that after 60 years of abuse, injustice, and discrimination, we can all look forward to a refreshing change.

Yes, that Umno dominance must be crushed and buried; Malaysia as a nation deserves better. Koh, are you casting your vote for Lim Guan Eng or Ramkarpal Singh?

Clever Voter: Koh so unashamedly called for an end to one-party dominance. While he meant to end DAP, he should also shout louder to his BN colleagues who see no reason to do so.

He had better not be a liability. It wasn't long ago that the whole of Penang was in a state of disrepair.

Corruption among politicians and civil servants were so rampant that nothing was done to a point that Komtar was a sore thumb. People even recall that the streets were not cleaned, but importantly, the chief minister was not paying attention.

At the national level, Koh said nothing of his scandal-tainted coalition. He chose to stay silent on issues that really mattered.

He might have won a few votes if he stood up against national practices of corruption, injustice and mismanagement. How about starting with the budgets of the Prime Minister’s Department, the Department of Islamic Development (Jakim), et cetera?

There is no shortage of real issues; focusing on trivial bread-and-butter issues among Penang folks is barking up the wrong tree. We agree to end the one-party rule, end BN rule now.

Anonymous_3e86: Absolutely correct. The rakyat should get rid of BN and let Harapan rule for a few terms. If the country doesn’t progress, then it’s time for another party to govern the country. BN has passed its expiry date a long time ago.

DAP in Penang has only governed for two terms. That’s not considered dominance yet, unlike Umno.

Anonymous_534b7352: Stop one-party dominance? Yes, vote Harapan to rid the country of the allegedly kleptocratic (one-party) BN.

Wavering BN supporters, it is time to overcome fear and intimidation and openly declare your support for a change.

Change the course of our country in the 14th general election for a better future.

Kheng: Check and balance? What a joke from this ex-Penang chief minister. Did anyone of us ever hear a creak from Gerakan MPs in Parliament on 1MDB?

By the way, didn't Umno provide the checks and balances in the last Penang state assembly? Oh, how conveniently you have forgotten.

Koh, do you truthfully think Teng Chang Yeow can act on his own without Umno pulling the strings?

I have sat at a luncheon table with you just before the 2008 general election, and you were lamenting that your hands were tied as Umno was calling all the shots.

Was this true, or were you attempting to cover up your weaknesses by shifting the blame to Umno?

Kikyo: Koh, you are a well-educated man, and many people respect you. For this reason, you must speak up against corruption and social injustice.

With millions and billions stolen, who suffers?

Our poor rural compatriots and our ‘abang adik’ (brothers) living in poverty. ‘Anak-anak’ (children) deprived of opportunity and education. And the foreign workers, who are bullied and intimidated. All this, because of bad governance and rampant corruption.

Stop your personal vendetta and support the rakyat for a better Malaysia. Vote against BN and vote for power to be returned to the people.

Allforit: Being a Penangite, Koh should not be surprised with the warm reception he received at Mount Erskine Market. Penangites are civil and nice people.

As for Tanjong Bungah, it is the "Bel Air" of Penang, the wealthy don't want their surroundings disturbed, but sometimes they have to share the prime land with others.

On the other hand, DAP has to limit the high development density around the area. They should also penalise irresponsible developers. They are the biggest destroyers of the green environment, especially the hills and fronting the beach.

Unscrupulous and greedy is what I will use to describe these developers.

Anonymous_c9b96c38: I used to respect Koh. Now, I have lost all respect for him for not making his stand against 1MDB and other notable corruption cases.

A PhD holder and a university lecturer, how can he close his eyes to the biggest corruption case in history -1MDB? It is sad that he is so educated but lacking in wisdom and moral strength.

Victor Johan: Koh, the Penangites need more terms of the Harapan coalition as the state government, and for them to work together with the new federal Harapan coalition government after this election.

The few Umno-led BN winning candidates can take their role as the new opposition front at the Parliament House to play your proposed “check and balance” role.

One of the BN-elected representatives can take up the role of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairperson and reopen the necessary investigations and lift the “embargo” imposed by the Official Secrets Act (OSA).
