Former Umno minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz has thanked Pakatan Harapan for being generous enough to give RM100,000 annual allocation to the constituencies won by BN.

He, however, preferred the government not to channel the annual allocation to opposition lawmakers, but spend it directly at the opposition constituencies.

The Padang Rengas parliamentarian said this will spare him from the pain of handling the allocation.

"I am happy with the allocation. If the amount is lesser than Pakatan Harapan's (constituencies), it is understandable because they need to prioritise their seats.

"In fact, I am happier if they spend the whole amount in opposition constituencies rather than give RM100,000 to opposition MPs. It's neater and clean-cut and will not give rise to any issues later.

"What is important is the rakyat will get the money and it doesn't matter who hands it out," he told Malaysiakini. 

He stressed that taking care of the opposition constituencies is part of the government's responsibility.

"Anway, I thank the cabinet for their generosity and hope they can consider my opinion as it will make my job easier as an MP," he said, adding that he will direct all applications in his constituency to a Harapan representative.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that an annual allocation of RM500,000 will be given to federal seats won by Harapan while the seats won the opposition will only get RM100,000.

He also said that RM200,000 would be allocated for the MPs' service centres, but it is unclear if this was inclusive of opposition lawmakers as well.
