Annuar Musa, who is contesting for the Umno deputy president post, claimed he had reprimanded former premier Najib Abdul Razak on the RM2.6 billion in the latter's personal bank accounts.
The Ketereh MP said that he and several Umno supreme council members even submitted a memorandum to Najib on the matter.
“Many do not know that I was the spokesperson for a group comprising ministers and supreme council members which confronted Najib demanding an answer to the RM2.6 billion issue.
“I went to Najib's office with the memorandum and warned that Umno could lose the 14th general election if the (former) government failed to deal with certain issues in a proper manner.
“The memorandum was three pages. It was a strong reprimand, just that it was done in a civil and ethical manner,” he told Sinar Harian in a Facebook live interview.
He was responding to those who accused him of not questioning Najib on the sum, which the former premier maintains is a donation from a Saudi royalty.
However, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has alleged that the RM2.6 billion originated from 1MDB.
Meanwhile, Annuar also stressed that it is important for a leader to possess a high degree of integrity.
The Umno lawmaker also clarified the issues surrounding Mara when he was its chairperson.
Annuar claimed he was not investigated and that he had went to the MACC office in January last year to facilitate the probe.
“People had the impression that I was investigated. I went to MACC without being summoned. I brought a file along and asked MACC to investigate.
“Suddenly, there were allegations against me. The issue of purchasing properties happened before my time as Mara chairperson.
“The issue of the football sponsorship was also incorrect. If I responded (to those who made the allegation), the issue would not be resolved. So I went straight to the MACC office to cooperate and MACC found the allegation to be untrue,” he added.
The matter first came to light when Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Tunku Ibrahim alleged that a certain "Tan Sri" had forced Mara and its entities to sponsor the Kelantan football team.
