SG KANDIS POLLS | Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam should stop using religion as his personal campaign tool in the Sungai Kandis by-election, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said last night.

The Malay Mail quoted Amirudin as saying that while Lokman had claimed to champion Islam and fight for the rights of Muslims, Pakatan Harapan's candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni is a scholar who is well-versed in religious matters.

"One day after he was nominated, Lokman was making a lot of fuss about how he will champion Islam and fight for the Muslims, but in a way that can easily incite fear and panic.

"Fine, he wants to lead the Muslims in Selangor, when it is a fact that Harapan has fielded an ustaz who is also a nadzir (mosque caretaker), an imam and a community leader, then he turned around to say we are the ones who are bringing Islam down," Amirudin reportedly said at a ceramah in Taman Sri Andalas, Klang, last night.

Lokman, who is also leader of NGO Pemantau Malaysia Baru, last week repeated claims of purported attempts by DAP to make Christianity Malaysia's official religion.

While campaigning, Lokman had also reportedly promised to protect Zawawi's tahfiz school - Maahad Tahfiz Al Fateh - from purported attempts by the government to shut down such religious institutions.

Amirudin also said Lokman should stop using religion as a platform for self-promotion and follow Harapan’s example of championing Islamic development through its various programmes.

"Not only have we built religious schools over the years, we have also recently erected a tahfiz school in Kota Kemuning, which is in the vicinity of Sungai Kandis.

"Since 2009, we have given away Qurban meat to all surau and mosques in the state during Hari Raya Aidiladha, on top of other financial contributions," the Sungai Tua assemblyperson was quoted as saying.

"To make it clear, we have also never pawned a single piece of Malay reserve land in Selangor. That’s how much we uphold and protect the rights of Malays and Muslims here," he stressed.

The by-election for the Sungai Kandis state seat is being held following the passing of its former incumbent, PKR's Shuhaimi Shafiei, on July 2 due to lymphoma.

On May 9, Shuhaimi obtained 23,998 votes to win the Malay-majority seat, defeating BN's Kamaruzzaman Johar (11,518 votes), PAS' Mohd Yusof Abdullah (7,573) and PRM's Hanafiah Husin (76).
