Singapore human rights activist James Gomez will speaking on free speech in the city state as part of an event to launch his book, Self-Censorship: Singapore's Shame , in a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

Gomez, an outspoken former student activist and founder of Singapore-based non-governmental organisation Think Centre, will appear at the MPH bookstore's "Speaker's Corner" at 3pm in Mid Valley Megamall.

He will also be speaking on Singapore-Malaysia ties, human rights and politics.

Self-Censorship : Singapore's Shame , which was published in Singapore early this year, examines the factors that have caused most Singaporeans to "censor" themselves. It also explores the chances for alternative political expression and action.

"I hope to be standing on a box and speaking about my book, how I find some aspects of the book to be relevant to Malaysia, which has prompted me to write my next book on Malaysia called Malaysia Malu ," he told malaysiakini when contacted.

Gomez, who is well known in Singapore through his participation and organisation of activities at Singapore's Speaker's Corner at Hong Lim Park, said that tomorrow's event would also be a novel way of bringing the Singapore experience to Malaysia.

"We will be doing it in the non-traditional way to show some kind of connection between Singapore's Speaker's Corner and attempts to set up Speaker's Corners in campuses in Malaysia," he said, adding that he will be accompanied by three other members of Think Centre.
