PKR's Kuala Selangor division election postponed

PKR POLLS | The Kuala Selangor PKR divisional election which was supposed to be held today has been postponed because of internet connection problems.

The head of the Kuala Selangor election committee Azmira Ibrahim said the new date for the branch polls will be determined later by the party.

"Today we are facing internet-related issues that cannot support the e-voting system, but it is not because the e-voting system is problematic.

"As for the delay in announcing the postponement of this (division) election, it is because we needed to first get confirmation from the central election committee before making the announcement," she said when met by reporters at the Kuala Selangor Indoor Stadium today.

Kuala Selangor has a total of 17,737 members who are eligible to vote in the election.

Earlier, there was a commotion as PKR members, who were present since 8.30am, were told today that the election was cancelled.

However, the situation was kept under control by those on duty and security personnel.

Meanwhile, Juwairiya Zulkifli, the candidate contesting for the post of Kuala Selangor division chief, said that election committee should re-evaluate the use of the e-ballot system.

"This is not the first time that the weak internet connection problem has occurred, it also happened in the elections earlier in Malacca and Kedah, and the election committee had then assured that the same thing would not be repeated, but it was repeated today.

"If we used the manual system, this would not happen," said the Bukit Melawati assemblyperson.

Juwairiya that she and the other candidates had agreed that it was best for the polls to be postponed after taking into consideration the safety and convenience of PKR members who were present (for the election), while at the same time not wanting to cause any fuss and commotion.
