PKR POLLS | Police have confirmed that the device discovered at the Kuala Selangor Indoor Stadium where the PKR election being held was a jammer.

The election for the Kuala Selangor division was aborted after the tablets meant for the e-voting process did not have any connection.

Kuala Selangor district police chief Mohd Asri A Wahab said the device was a six-antenna mobile phone jammer.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief and thereby causing loss or damage amounting to more than RM25,000.

The offence carries a penalty of between one to five years imprisonment, a fine or both.

Earlier, a candidate in the Kuala Selangor PKR election claimed that a mobile jammer had been used to sabotage the party election that was supposed to take place there this morning.

Kuala Selangor PKR Youth chief candidate R Sabahbathi said the device was found by district council workers this afternoon while cleaning up the Kuala Selangor Indoor Stadium where the election was to take place.

After inspecting the device, he said the workers summoned PKR personnel who were dismantling canopies outside the stadium, including himself, to come to collect the device.

The device was allegedly placed on the floor amongst the spectators’ seats. It had a metal casing with six antennas, and labels that read “4G” and “WiFi”.

“They (the council workers) didn’t know what it was. They asked us and they thought someone left something behind and they wanted to close the stadium.

“When we went over to take a look, our phones couldn’t make calls anymore. When we turned it off, the phone can take calls again,” Sabahbathi told Malaysiakini when contacted.

At the time of writing, PKR election committee chairperson Rashid Din told Malaysiakini that he has yet to receive a report on the matter and was unaware of the allegation.

Sabahbathi said he has lodged a police report over the matter, claiming that he and running mate M Gohgilarajan suspected that certain individuals used the device to disrupt and "sabotage" this morning’s party election.

Earlier today, Bernama reported that the Kuala Selangor PKR divisional election had been postponed to a date that would be determined later, due to internet connection problems. 

“Today we are facing internet-related issues that cannot support the e-voting system, but it is not because the e-voting system is problematic.

“As for the delay in announcing the postponement of this (division) election, it is because we needed to first get confirmation from the election committee before making the announcement,” Kuala Selangor election committee chief Azmira Ibrahim was quoted as saying.
