PKR members reminded not to stray from reform agenda

Members and leaders of PKR have been reminded not to stray from the party’s idealism of the reform struggle even though it was now part of the federal government.

PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali said this was because history has warned that the lust for power and positions had greatly affected revolutions in the past.

"Whether it be the French Revolution or the Bolshevik Revolution, even the Arab Spring, which began with the noble agenda to free the people, (the revolutions) had deviated and eventually betrayed the people's aspirations.

"It can also infect PKR if we neglect the goals and idealism of the struggle," Azmin said when opening the 13th annual national congress for PKR’s Wanita and Youth wings at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam last night.

He added that the calls for reform should no longer remain as mere chants or slogans but rather be set as part of the national development agenda in line with an era which demands positive thinking and the seeking of solutions.

Azmin then went on to advise PKR members to focus on strengthening the solidarity of the party, especially after its lengthy election period.

"I would like to congratulate more than 150,000 PKR members who recently carried out their democratic responsibility to choose the party's leaders. Come on, let's unite and remain determined to move forward," he said.

Also present at the opening ceremony with more than 1,500 grassroots members were Wanita PKR chief Zuraida Kamarudin, Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Central Leadership Council member Amirudin Shari.
