The Sri Sithi Vinayagar temple saw a belated interfaith cultural celebration of Deepavali today.

About 22 religious organisations attended the event held at the Petaling Jaya temple this evening.

“This is a solidarity, interfaith event. Today we invited everybody in this area, whether churches, mosques, etc., and all of them accepted our invitation.

“It was a cultural function, not a religious function, and all the kids took part, and I’m very happy,” temple committee president A Yogesvaran told Malaysiakini after the event today.

Yogesvaran (photo) noted that he was pleased that all 22 Petaling Jaya-based organisations accepted the invitation to attend the cultural event.

The crowd of about 150 people were entertained by traditional Indian dance performances as well as renditions of Tamil and Malay songs, before a children’s fashion show reflecting the different cultures in Malaysia was staged.

Yogesvaran pointed out that all the performers are devotees of the Sri Sithi Vinayagar temple.

Also in attendance was Petaling MP Maria Chin Abdullah, who said that such cultural events are a good way to maintain peaceful interactions among people of different faiths.

“At this moment, I feel it is very necessary for such interreligious interaction because it reflects the diversity and unity in Malaysia.

“At the same time, we also need a dialogue on issues so that we can establish some kind of common understanding among the races,” she said.

Maria added that the different religious organisations in her constituency are planning to establish an interfaith group, which she described as “a good step.”
