Former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak believes that the party can resist the "cruel" Pakatan Harapan government just as it fought and defeated the communists during the decades-long insurgency.
Speaking at the Gombak Umno annual general meeting today, he urged the party grassroots not to let him fight the battle all by himself.
"We must dare to fight... we are not a party that has sunk into history," he said.
Najib also pointed out that party forebears once fought British colonialists before standing against the communists.
Unlike those who were defeated because they fought in small groups, he added, Umno fought in unity with other partners, which led to its victory against the communists.
"Today, shouldn't we be ready and fight? Fight and don't be afraid. Look at history.
"Don't let me (fight the battle) all by myself. Fight. We must fight the cruelty of the government," he exclaimed.

Gombak Umno is the third division that has invited the former party president to officiate its AGM, after Jeli and Parit Sulong.
A total of 191 Umno divisions will hold their AGMs between June 15 and Aug 15.
At today's AGM, Najib was greeted passionately by grassroots members, who took selfies and embraced him in a show of support.
Besides criticising Harapan over its purportedly unfulfilled promises, Najib shared tips on how to keep the government in check during his 40-minute speech.
This includes reposting older news about those in government when there are new developments to point out contradictions.
In his speech, Gombak Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin pledged to wrest the parliamentary seat from Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, as well as win the three state seats in the constituency, Sungai Tua, Gombak Setia, and Hulu Kelang.
Megat also said that grassroots Umno members should look to Najib to learn how to fight ahead of the next general election.
When met later, Najib said he had no knowledge of being inhibited from making a comeback in Umno by its central leadership, as alleged by party insiders.
"It is natural to have different opinions in a big party," the Pekan Umno chief said, adding that it is up to Umno members to choose their leaders and chart the course for the future.
"Whatever it is, it is the members will decide because the party is very open and very democratic," he stressed.
Najib stepped down as Umno president on May 12 after BN was suffered an unprecedented defeat in the 2018 general election.
His new 'bossku' makeover, however, has seen his popularity gain traction among some sections of the public.
