PKR lawmaker Hassan Karim, who called for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's resignation yesterday, has been told by his party to focus on his job as an elected representative.
PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said he called Hassan yesterday after the latter issued his statement.
"I called him and asked him to focus on the people's issues, and leave the matter to be managed by the top leadership of Pakatan Harapan," he said when met in Kuala Lumpur today.
Saifuddin also disagreed with Hassan's assumption that Harapan is at risk of dissolution under Mahathir's leadership.
"No. I refer back to the consensus of Harapan," he said, in reference to the agreement that Mahathir would be named prime minister if the coalition won the last general election.
Harapan had agreed for PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to succeed Mahathir as the eighth premier without giving any timeline.
Mahathir was reported as saying that he needed three years to rectify things and implement the policies needed to bring the country forward.
In February, Anwar said he expected to take over the premiership in another two years.
The controversial sex video clip implicating PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, which surfaced in June, was said to be linked to the transition of power.
Several Bersatu leaders recently urged Mahathir to serve out his full term, while former Umno minister Rafidah Aziz urged Malaysians to stop speaking about the transition of power between Mahathir and Anwar.
Yesterday, Hassan claimed that if Mahathir was unable to solve several national issues, it was time for him to go.
Hassan said his proposal was in Harapan's best interests, amid raging issues involving race, religion and royalty which, he said, in the past had thrice caused the breakup of predecessor coalitions.
