The US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has expressed disappointment over Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call for US President Donald Trump to resign, ahead of the latter's bid for re-election in November.

Taking to Twitter, the embassy said Mahathir's remarks, made in response to Trump's proposed peace deal for Palestine, were not in the constructive spirit that served as a long-standing foundation between Malaysia and US.

"We are disappointed regarding the prime minister’s comments regarding President Trump.

“The prime minister’s remarks were not in the spirit of the constructive dialogue that has long served as the foundation of US-Malaysia relations," the embassy said in a statement on Twitter.

It further pointed out how US-Malaysian bilateral ties have produced important outcomes within the region and on a global scale.

"We have co-operated on issues such as security, trade, education, public health and environment," it added.

Directly asked for his advice to Trump in light of the latest US-backed peace plan which has been largely rejected by Palestine and its allies, Mahathir yesterday said: "Resign."

"I wish the Americans would have made a better decision.

"Here is a man who denigrated his role and his policies, trying to use foreign pressure to win elections," Mahathir said after delivering his speech at the third conference of the League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds in Kuala Lumpur.

Al-Quds refers to a city in Jerusalem - a land considered holy to all three major Abrahamic religions - claimed by both Israel and Palestine as their capital.

Hundreds of lawmakers who formed the League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds gathered in Kuala Lumpur and earlier today passed nine resolutions on their support for the Palestinian cause and condemnation of Israel.
