CORONAVIRUS | The residential areas in the vicinity of the Kuala Lumpur wholesale market have been placed under the enhanced movement control order (MCO).
Barbed wires have been placed from the entrance of the wholesale market near the Batu Caves temple roundabout up to the Sri Murni apartments.
Police and soldiers were seen manning roadblocks at every junction, ordering scores of people who wanted to enter the area to head back home.
Armed Forces chief General Affendy Buang and his entourage left the area at about 1pm.
He is believed to have been there to monitor the situation and deployment of armed forces personnel at the location.
According to security personnel Malaysiakini interviewed, the location was put under an enhanced MCO since midnight.
Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in a press conference later, confirmed the enhanced MCO in the surrounding areas of the wholesale market.
He said it involved eight parcels and are as follow:
- Parcel A: Jalan 6/3A, Pusat Bandar Utara, Kuala Lumpur
- Parcel B: Jalan 6/3A dan 9/3A, Pusat Bandar Utara, Kuala Lumpur
- Parcel C: Jalan 2/3A, Pusat Bandar Utara, Kuala Lumpur
- Parcel D: Jalan 2/3A, Pusat Bandar Utara, Kuala Lumpur
- Parcel E1: Taman Sri Murni Fasa 2, Jalan 1/2D, Kuala Lumpur
- Parcel E2: Taman Sri Murni Fasa 1, Jalan 1/2D, Kuala Lumpur
- Parcel E3: Taman Sri Murni Fasa 3, Jalan 1/2B, Kuala Lumpur
- Parcel F: Taman Batu View dan Taman Batu Hampar, Kuala Lumpur
Ismail (photo) said the enhanced MCO for the area will last until May 3.
He added that the area is predominantly occupied by Rohingya refugees.
The senior minister said if residents need any help, they can contact the Kuala Lumpur City Hall MCO operations room at 03-40267222 and the Sentul district police station command centre at 03-40482212.
"This sixth enhanced MCO is to curb the spread of Covid-19. This period will allow tracing activities to take place.
"All residents are asked to stay calm, cooperate with Health Ministry personnel and abide by all instructions by the authorities," he said.
Previously, Simpang Renggam and Hulu Langat were also placed under enhanced MCO.
The third enhanced MCO was at Menara City One along Jalan Munshi Abdullah, while the fourth at Selangor Mansion and Malayan Mansion near Masjid India.
The fifth one saw an expansion to the surrounding areas around Masjid Jamek.
Under an enhanced MCO, everyone is prevented from leaving their home under any circumstances and all businesses must close with heavy police and military presence.
For other parts of Malaysia, the regular MCO applies.
Under the regular MCO, only non-essential businesses and services have to close.
People are required to stay home but are allowed to make short trips to replenish food supply or seek medication.
As of noon yesterday, Malaysia recorded 5,389 Covid-19 cases with 89 deaths.
Of those infected, 3,197 have recovered while another 2,103 are in treatment.
The MCO is scheduled to end on April 28 if it is not extended for the third time.
