COVID-19 | The number of deaths caused by the novel coronavirus rose by 978 to 181,143 people, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Saturday, reporting a total of 5,890,532 cases, an increase of 44,656 from its previous count.

The CDC reported its tally of cases of the respiratory illness known as Covid-19, caused by a new coronavirus, as of 4pm ET on Aug 28 (4am Aug 29, Malaysian time) versus its previous report a day earlier.

The CDC figures do not necessarily reflect cases reported by individual states.

Meanwhile, Brazil has registered another 758 novel coronavirus deaths over the last 24 hours and 41,350 new cases, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

The nation has now registered 120,262 coronavirus deaths and 3,846,153 confirmed cases.

In terms of total deaths, Brazil is the hardest-hit country in the world outside of the US. However, daily new cases and deaths have begun to stabilise in recent weeks.
