COVID-19 | Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has confirmed that a state executive councillor (exco) tested positive for Covid-19 following a recent trip to Sabah.

Since the state election, Sabah has become the new epicentre of the virus outbreak in the country.

Contacted today, Sanusi (above) briefly replied “yes” when asked to confirm the matter but did not name the exco in question.

The menteri besar himself is not under quarantine because he had no close contact with the exco.

It was previously reported that an exco was warded at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar yesterday after returning from Kota Kinabalu.

According to government newswire Bernama, Kedah Health Department director Dr Mohd Fikri Ujang assured that no other state excos have tested positive for the virus.

“The department is conducting contact tracing for the exco in question, including close contact with any family members over the past 14 days.

“For now, only this exco has been found positive. No other excos have been infected,” he was quoted as saying.

It is understood that the exco had contracted the virus from an aide who tested positive for Covid-19 this week.

The Kedah government is expected to issue a full statement on the matter soon.

Earlier today, an aide confirmed that Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin was under home quarantine after coming into close contact with a Covid-19 patient at an event in Langkawi, Kedah on Sept 27.

According to the NGO Penggerak Komuniti, of which Zuraida is a patron, the Bersatu minister attended an urban farming workshop for women at Frangipani Natural Farm School on the island last Sunday.

Kedah has seen a spike in Covid-19 in recent weeks. As of noon today, the northern state recorded 98 new cases - 53 foreign nationals and 45 citizens.

The Health Ministry also identified a new cluster - dubbed “Bah Ketil” - in the state.

The index case for this cluster is a 39-year-old Malaysian male who has a history of travelling to Tawau, Sabah from Sept 17 to 21. The patient was declared positive on Sept 28. The cluster presently has nine cases including the index case.
