Both Umno and PAS are vying to contest the Alor Setar parliamentary seat in the 15th general election, according to Utusan Malaysia.
The Malay daily reported today that a tussle is expected as both parties had expressed confidence in wresting the semi-urban Kedah seat from Pakatan Harapan.
According to Utusan, the local Umno division had previously indicated its intention to claim the seat traditionally contested by MCA, while PAS cited the outcome of GE14 to justify its own stake.
It further quoted Kedah PAS commissioner Ahmad Yahaya who confirmed the party's intention to contest the seat, if entrusted to do so by the top Muafakat Nasional and Perikatan Nasional leaders.
He pointed out that since neither PAS nor Umno had won the seat in GE14, it should now be up for grabs for both parties.
"Umno can't claim the seat as theirs (BN) after the loss (by MCA) in GE14, and the same goes for PAS.
"So now the seat is open for PAS and Umno to offer their candidates, and it is up to the top leadership to determine the best party," Ahmad was quoted as saying, adding that PAS had polled second place above BN in the 2018 polls.
PKR's Chan Ming Kai won the Alor Setar seat in a three-cornered contest against PAS and BN with 32,475 votes and a 15,200 majority.
PAS' candidate Muhammad Aminur Shafiq Mohamad Abduh received 17,275 votes while BN's Yoo Wei How trailed in third place with 14,181.
