COVID-19 | Only the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is advisable for inoculation of pregnant and nursing mothers against Covid-19, according to Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
Speaking to reporters today, the minister in charge of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (Pick) said this is based on recommendations made by specialists.
“Based on recommendations made by specialists, for pregnant and nursing mothers, they should only take the Pfizer vaccine.
“For pregnant mothers, they are advised to take the vaccine when their pregnancy is between week 14 and week 33. If it is beyond that period, they are advised to wait until after they have delivered.
“Those who are nursing, they are suitable to receive the vaccine,” he said during a virtual press conference organised by the Covid-19 Vaccine Supply Access Guarantee Special Committee this afternoon.
Khairy said they have asked the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force to coordinate with hospitals and maternity clinics so that pregnant and nursing mothers can be given the priority to get the Pfizer vaccine.
He said the Health deputy director-general Dr Chong Chee Keong has been tasked to coordinate the matter, to make sure that Pfizer vaccines would be made available to the group.
Meanwhile, Khairy was also asked about pregnant and lactating mothers who have already taken other types of Covid-19 vaccine during the immunisation programme, whether there is any advice for them and if nursing mothers should stop feeding their newborn.
This came as a number of them were said to have been inoculated before health authorities issued their Pfizer-only advice.
Khairy said there is limited data on the safety of Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines for nursing mothers, and advice would be issued after consultation.
"Those who have questions or doubts, please get a consultation from your clinical doctor. This is the existing guideline," he said.
