Umno supreme council member Johari Abdul Ghani said no candidate was eligible for the position of prime minister due to a lack of majority support in the wake of Muhyiddin Yassin's resignation.
Citing concern for the country's economy and health, he suggested that a unity government be formed instead, run by MPs who are accepted by all.
“Realistically, there is no political coalition with a sufficient majority of seats and a general election cannot be announced at this time.
"Therefore, there is no clear prime ministerial candidate,” he tweeted yesterday.
Muhyiddin’s majority collapsed after 15 Umno MPs withdrew support for him.
In an effort to regain the majority, Muhyiddin offered various reform proposals in exchange for support by opposition lawmakers but was subsequently rejected.
His offer included equal funding for opposition MPs and reforms that have long been lobbied for by the opposition, such as a term limit for prime ministers, anti-hopping laws, and a more inclusive composition of parliamentary selection committees.
Elaborating further on his proposal, Johari said the political parties in the unity government needed to reach a consensus on its duration and objectives.
The former finance minister II divided it into four main aspects: the Covid-19 pandemic; people's welfare; government financial management, and economic recovery.
“The priority should be ridding the country of the Covid-19 pandemic by achieving herd immunity through rapid vaccination rollout.
“The new government also needs to ensure transparency in the management and distribution of vaccines.
“The new government must also give priority to the welfare of the people who have suffered during the pandemic due to mismanagement," he said.
He added that businesses should be allowed to resume operations as soon as possible with very strict guidelines.
"We cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past 17 months, which saw us losing our economic advantage. This had brought about a lack of competitiveness and instability due to the actions of the Perikatan Nasional government," he said.
