Anwar slams MOU's 'slow and deliberately delayed' progress

PARLIAMENT | Pakatan Harapan is dissatisfied with the progress of the reforms as promised in the memorandum of understanding (MOU) they signed with the federal government almost a month ago on Sept 13, said Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim (Harapan-Port Dickson).
Anwar said this in the Dewan Rakyat today after Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mustapa Mohamed brought up the importance of political stability to revive the economy and attract foreign investors to the country.
“Because the minister mentioned the MOU for political stability, I would like to say that even though there have been a few improvements, the improvements are so weak to the point that not even parliamentary reforms have been successful.
“I want to say today that we are not satisfied (with the progress) because it is slow and deliberately delayed,” Anwar said.
It has been almost a month since the MOU was signed, he said, and there has not been any commitment to implement the reforms aside from talking up political stability.
Going against spirit of democracy
On the contrary, Anwar said, the government had done some things that go against the spirit of democracy.
“Several other steps (taken by the government) are in conflict with the spirit of democracy, transparency as well as the spirit of cooperation as mentioned by the prime minister,” he said.
The MOU – signed between Pakatan Harapan and the federal government led by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob – is meant to restore political stability through a series of reforms, which, in turn, will help the country’s fight against Covid-19 and economic recovery.
Some of the reforms include limiting the term of a prime minister to 10 years, an anti-hopping law, a list of parliamentary reforms, ensuring judicial independence and strengthening the country’s Covid-19 plan.
