Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob launched the Keluarga Malaysia Foundation tonight, with the aim of helping children impacted by Covid-19, especially with their education.
The foundation will provide assistance until the children are 18 years old, although no further specifics or budget was mentioned during Ismail Sabri's announcement.
He also indicated that the foundation may help other struggling children.
"The foundation is a manifestation of Keluarga Malaysia's love as a whole, which we express together for the children affected by the pandemic.
"After that, the foundation will spread its protective wings to other Keluarga Malaysia children who also need similar support.
"I urge the whole Malaysian family to help this generation (of children). My hope is that with this foundation, there will be no more Malaysian children who have to suffer alone," Ismail Sabri said in a speech at the launch of Keluarga Malaysia in Kuching, Sarawak.
In his remarks leading up to announcing the foundation, the prime minister related how 5,173 children have lost one or both parents to Covid-19.
He said all Malaysians should look after these orphans so that they can lead a normal life.
