Bersatu vice-president Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen has denied that a picture of party president Muhyiddin Yassin handing back RM5 to a motorcyclist was bribery caught on camera.
Instead, he said Muhyiddin was giving the man his change after the latter went shopping via drive-thru at a Gerai Prihatin Rakyat.
"The photo being spread is when Muhyiddin visited the Gerai Prihatin Rakyat and was returning change to a Malaccan worth RM5," Rafiq said in an audio statement.
He added that the allegations claiming it was bribery was slanderous and meant to defame the former prime minister.
Rafiq said the Gerai Prihatin Rakyat - which sells sundry goods at cheap prices - was organised by an NGO.
However, it has been closely linked to Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional.
Under the programme, four selected items - 2kg potatoes, one whole chicken, one carton of eggs and one 200g Milo packet - will be sold for RM15 to one member from households earning below RM4,000.
According to a poster, the sale will be conducted via a drive-thru system and limited to the first 2,000 customers.
The sale coincides with the upcoming Malacca election.
Electoral watchdog Bersih has warned that the cheap sales could be seen as a form of inducement.
Bersatu is slated to face both Umno and Pakatan Harapan in the state polls.
The party is in for a tough fight, and preliminary analysis indicated that it may be at risk of a major setback in Malacca.
