SARAWAK POLLS | Heavy rain did not deter voters under the Bawang Assan state seat from going out to cast their ballots for the Sarawak election.
Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Wong Soon Koh who is contesting in Bawang Assan and GPS Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew were among those seen casting their votes at the SJKC Chung Hua polling station.
The polling centre was under the spotlight this morning since three candidates were there to cast their ballots.
At about 8am, heavy rain and strong winds nearly damaged the health workers’ canopy, forcing them to shift to a safer spot.
Returning officer Suhaili Mohamed said Election Commission (EC) staff had also been tasked with helping voters without umbrellas.
'Rain won't dampen voters' spirit'
Despite the bad weather, Wong believes voters will still come out.
"It's unfortunate that it's raining quite heavily this morning. I hope the weather will clear up, the rain will stop, so that people can come out to vote.
"The rain will not dampen the spirit of voters, they will come out when the rain stops," he said.
The 79-year-old has been the Bawang Assan assemblyperson since 1981 and previously contested on a BN ticket.
At the 11th state election in 2016, Wong won the seat as a BN candidate by defeating four others with a majority of 4,131 votes.
Bawang Assan has 19,650 voters and the electorate is split evenly between bumiputera and non-bumiputera voters.
As of 11am, voter turnout was at 32 percent, according to the EC.
