Selangor exco V Ganabatirau has warned that the country will continue to be faced with natural disasters from time to time, so long as corruption still persists in Malaysia.
He claimed so far Malaysia has emerged as a failed state due to corruption at all levels.
"The main reason our country has failed today is because of corruption. We must admit it. It's as simple as that," said the Kota Kemuning assemblyperson.
"We're still talking about planned developments. We have highly qualified engineers.
"We send our engineers repeatedly to attend various courses in England, the US and others, but the quality received from the planned development was atrocious. This is because of corruption," Ganabatirau (above) told Malaysiakini.
He said this when asked for comments on a proposal by several leaders that there needed to be further studies conducted to prevent future natural disasters.
'Rakyat's anger at its peak'
Ganabatirau cited the latest flooding that inundated many parts of Selangor and other peninsula states, resulting in both losses of lives and properties.
Just in his constituency, he said some 14,000 families were impacted, and they were rightly sensitive to comments suggesting that further studies are needed to identify the cause of the flood.
"There is no need to study. The issue here is corruption and lack of transparency.
"People riding on race and religion to hold on to power forever," he said.
"The people's anger is at its peak but we are still talking about the need for planned developments.
"Corruption, that's the main reason for our failure. Just admit it," he said.
