Covid-19 (Feb 6): 10,089 cases, first 10k barrier breach since Oct 2

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 10,089 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,914,220.

The fresh infections today are the highest in 127 days, since Oct 2.

The new cases comprised 9,743 Malaysians (96.6 percent) and 346 non-citizens (3.4 percent).

They were more than the number of Covid-19 patients who recovered, which totalled 6,460. This is expected to increase the number of active cases.

A total of 143 cases (1.4 percent) were imported while the remaining 9,946 (98.6 percent) were domestic transmissions.

As of yesterday, the national infectivity rate (R number) stood at 1.2. The value must be kept under 1.0 to prevent an exponential spread of the virus.

The states with an infectivity rate above the national average are Perlis (1.49), Sabah (1.41), Putrajaya (1.29) and Kedah (1.22).

At present, 137 Covid-19 patients are in the intensive care unit of which 71 are unable to breathe on their own and have been intubated.

This is an increase of 14.2 percent compared to the 120 Covid-19 patients in the intensive care unit a week ago.

To date, 361 Covid-19 clusters are still active, including 11 new clusters reported today.

The ongoing clusters have seen an increase of 19.9 percent from the 301 active clusters a week ago.
