JOHOR POLLS | Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Abdul Latiff Ahmad has confirmed he will not be contesting in the upcoming Johor state election.
This comes after speculation that Bersatu wanted to field the five-term Mersing MP in Tenggaroh and nominate him as its menteri besar candidate.
In a statement today, Abdul Latiff (above) sought to put an end to such speculation.
He however assured that he will be stumping for Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the polls.
“Please be informed that I will not be contesting any seats in the upcoming Johor election.
“This will enable me to fully devote my time to my job as the Mersing MP and Special Functions Minister.
“I will give my full commitment to helping the party and PN’s campaigns to ensure PN candidates win,” he said.
Abdul Latiff was formerly with Umno until he defected to Bersatu after the 14th general election.
The nomination day for the Johor election is on Feb 26 while polling day is on Mar 12.
Similar to what transpired in the November 2021 Malacca election, Bersatu and PAS have joined forces as PN and will contest against Umno-BN.
Opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan, meanwhile, has joined forces with new youth-based party Muda.
The upcoming election is the first time where Malaysians aged 18 and above can vote. It is also the first election since automatic voter registration was implemented.
