Covid-19 (Feb 22): 27,179 new cases, 43 new fatalities

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry said 27,179 new daily Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total cumulative cases to 3,273,958.

Active cases currently stood at 267,084, up 182.8 percent compared to 14 days ago.

New cases according to states are as follows:

Johor (2,200)
Kelantan (2,043)
Pahang (1,668)
Kuala Lumpur (1,355)
Negeri Sembilan (1,157)

Another 43 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, of which 20 cases were declared as 'brought in dead'.

Over the past week, an average of 36.1 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 18.0, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the uptrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 32,433 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

The state with the most number of deaths is Sabah (12) followed by Johor (9), Negeri Sembilan (4), Selangor (4), Kedah (3), Kelantan (3), Pulau Pinang (3), Malacca (2), Perak (2), Kuala Lumpur (1).

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions, with 981 deaths per one million population, and fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

There are 7,574 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised, of which 286 are in intensive care.

According to Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, intensive care bed utilisation rate by Covid-19 patients is highest in Kelantan (78 percent) followed by Johor (69 percent).

Bed use for non-critical Covid-19 patients is also high in Perlis (114 percent), Kelantan (108 percent) and Selangor (99 percent).
