BN could risk losing the upcoming 15th general election (GE15) if it is not held within the next few months, warned Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Delaying GE15, he said, would only provide the opposition with the ammunition to continue their attacks against the coalition.

The BN chairperson alluded that it was due to this reason that the opposition has not sought Parliament’s dissolution despite their constant remarks about the government not having the people’s mandate or labelling it as a “back-door” administration.

“The party leadership and Umno grassroots are very confident that this is the best time to hold GE15. This justification has been explained many times.

“What is important is that Umno does not want the opposition to continue using the final months before the dissolution of Parliament to attack BN,” Zahid said on Facebook today.

The former deputy prime minister alleged that the opposition was using various perceptions to challenge the confidence of Umno and BN’s grassroots.

“The issues presented by the opposition are fragmented and not seen from a comprehensive perspective.

“In other words, they attack, spin and then try to create an image that they are the best, even though Pakatan Harapan, who was in power for 22 months, proved otherwise until their own PM resigned when he knew that their manifesto could not be fulfilled,” he added.

Zahid was referring to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation in February 2020 following the “Sheraton Move” political coup.

He also pointed to Mahathir’s recent interview with The Associated Press, where he admitted that the opposition was now split and disorganised, which was a good thing for the government in terms of preparation.

“Umno has already made its stance known a long time ago. Now, it is up to the government's leadership to expedite the demands of the grassroots and Umno,” Zahid added.
