Bersatu: Govt should teach refugees 'boundaries' with locals

Refugees should be taught about “boundaries” they should maintain with the locals, a Bersatu leader said.

Segambut Bersatu division chief Mahathir Mohd Rais (above) said the government should also prioritise locals in providing job opportunities, before mulling employing refugees.

He claimed that locals were finding it challenging to mingle and accept refugees’ lifestyles, for instance, the Rohingyas.

“Hence, the government should educate both the locals and refugees about the differences that exist between them.

"For instance, refugees must be taught 'boundaries' that are appreciated by the locals. The issues concern cleanliness and the way refugees interact with the locals, which can be seen as 'rough'.

“The locals are uneasy with such interaction," said Mahathir in a statement, adding that no one can be faulted on the matter as it is caused by cultural differences.

"Only by educating both sides can we ensure that misunderstandings and difficulties in socialising can be resolved."

According to Mahathir, who is also Federal Territories Perikatan Nasional (PN) information chief, there should also be “basic rules” on how long refugees can reside in the country.

"In the long term, issues concerning job opportunities should be handled and resolved, as there are an increasing number of people seeking refuge in our country.

"The government should prioritise locals (for jobs) and fix the country's economic issues to increase employment opportunities.

“Only when there are enough jobs, we can consider employing refugees so that they too, can build their lives here," said Mahathir.

He cautioned that there was a chance of more refugees flooding into the country due to external factors, such as the change in the global political and economic climate, which can lead to “anarchy” if not promptly addressed.

"The government must be prepared to handle any untoward incidents and external influence to prevent chaos.

"Political, economic and social action must be taken immediately to ensure the country's good name is not affected due to the sensitivity of the issue,” said Mahathir.
