Infectious diseases expert Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman has been appointed to the Geneva-based Global Commission on Drug Policy, the first Malaysian on the high-level commission.
The commission works to advocate harm reduction and drug policies, and is made up of influential personalities, including former heads of state.
Now headed by former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark, it was founded in 2011 and once counted the late United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan as a commissioner.
Congratulating Adeeba on the appointment, the Malaysian Aids Foundation (MAF) said its chairperson’s appointment is a “milestone in Malaysia’s leadership on the global harm reduction and HIV & Aids response”.
The foundation said the former Universiti Malaya dean of medicine’s work in harm reduction is well known and had been pivotal in influencing the Malaysian government’s shift in drug policies.
This includes the introduction of harm reduction programmes to prevent HIV infection among people who use drugs, such as the needle and syringe exchange programme and methadone maintenance therapy, the MAF said.
Adeeba is also the first Asian president of the International Aids Society and the co-chair of the World Health Organization’s Science Council.
