The ‘Mega Muar’ ceramah hosted by Muda last night was briefly interrupted by a group of rowdy youngsters.

The group of 20, who showed up at the event on motorcycles, had allegedly instigated a shouting match between them and Muda members and supporters during the speech of the youth party president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman.

In his speech, the incumbent Muar MP briefly talked about his contributions to his constituents in the past term.

This led to some in the group of rowdy youths to repeatedly accuse Syed Saddiq of being a “penipu” (liar), which caused Muda supporters and volunteers at the ceramah to shout at them to “balik” (go back).

Despite being told to leave the area by the auxiliary police present, the youths lingered at the scene and attempted to induce further noise by revving up their motorcycles.

Syed Saddiq’s communications head Farhan Iqbal later told reporters that the group was suspected to have been sent there by Umno. This led to the event organisers calling in the auxiliary police to monitor the scene.

Addressing the commotion that was taking place outside the ceramah tent, Syed Saddiq expressed that he wanted to protect the future of these youths.

‘Sad for youths who have to beg’

“It makes me sad when there are youths who have to beg from political elites to make a living.

“I feel sorry for them (the rowdy group). This is the reality of today, so how are we going to build a progressive country? This is not the future I want to build for them, this is not the reason I entered politics.

“Win or lose, I can promise that I will only protect you,” the Muar MP added at the event in the Parit Jawa mukim of the Muar District in Johor last night.

While the Muda president has not announced his candidacy yet, it is highly speculated that he would defend the Muar parliamentary seat.

However, out of respect to the seat negotiation process with Pakatan Harapan, Syed Saddiq said announcements would only be made on Saturday (Oct 22).

In GE14, Syed Saddiq won the Muar parliamentary seat under the Bersatu ticket by a 6,953 vote majority. The then-incumbent Muar MP, Razali Ibrahim from Umno, came in second at 15,388 followed by Maharani assemblyperson Abdul Aziz Talib from PAS.

Syed Saddiq will now be contesting under Muda, a party he co-founded, which will enter into an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan on GE15.
