Sarawak DAP to field eight candidates

Sarawak DAP will be fielding eight candidates for the next parliamentary election, one fewer than before.

DAP will be seeking to retain Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Mas Gading, Sibu, Lanang and Sarikei while challenging Gabungan Parti Sarawak in Serian and Bintulu.

Last night, Sarawak DAP head Chong Chieng Jen (above) revealed that all three incumbents have been retained as candidates for the Stampin, Mas Gading and Bandar Kuching seats.

The three are Chong, Mordi Bihol, and Kelvin Yii respectively.

"For the Serian seat, DAP is betting on a new face, Laerry Jabol," said Chong at a press conference in Kuching last night, according to Bernama.

During the 2018 election, DAP fielded a ninth candidate in Kapit. However, DAP fared poorly in Kapit as the incumbent Alexander Nanta Linggi won by a landslide.

Alexander has won the Kapit seat five times, including two walkover victories in 2004 and 2008.

This time around, Pakatan Harapan has assigned Kapit to PKR.

Previously, Chong told the press that PKR had expressed that they have a better chance of winning in Kapit.

He added that Kapit DAP grassroots have also vowed to assist their PKR allies.

'Localised' DAP

Meanwhile, Yii urged voters to look at Sarawak DAP as a "localised national party" and not a "Malaya party".

He explained that Sarawak DAP enjoys a degree of autonomy and can make a lot of its own decisions that would be beneficial to Sarawakians.

"We are all Sarawakians and we will fight for what is best for Sarawak," said Yii, according to Borneo Post.

As for Mordi, he urged Sarawakian voters to ensure that DAP MPs are elected to ensure there are better checks and balances.
