Bar urged to ask for court adjournment on polling day eve

A group of young lawyers called on the Malaysian Bar to put in a request for the adjournment of court matters on Nov 18 to allow its members to travel back to their hometowns to vote in the 15th general election (GE15).

Dubbed the Young Lawyers Movement, it said that arrangements needed for voters to travel back may overlap with their work schedule on the eve of polling day, considering the potentially daunting traffic situation for the day.

“As such, we call upon law firms to declare Nov 18 as a day off for their staff to travel back to their hometowns and for their annual leave not to be deducted.

“We welcome the Bar's support on this matter and kindly ask for them to also put in a request for adjournment of court matters on Nov 18.

“There is precedent for such requests, with the most recent example being the recent Walk for Judicial Independence. We believe that a general election is a significant event that would also require such adjournments,” it said in a statement.

The Young Lawyers Movement also noted a difficulty for office staff, young lawyers or pupils-in-chambers to afford or arrange for travel to their respective hometowns, considering the short notice that has been given.

Therefore, it has launched a Telegram group to assist members of the legal community who are seeking to coordinate transport back to their respective hometowns.

“With regard to the issue of transportation, we are launching a Telegram group to assist members of the legal community who are seeking to coordinate transport back to their respective hometowns.

“We hope that this may cut down transportation costs and traffic on Nov 18,” it said.
