Harapan list finalised, Anwar says after BN reveals candidates

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has brushed off the need for his party and Pakatan Harapan to revise its candidate list after BN and Perikatan Nasional unveiled their candidates yesterday.

This came after his deputy Rafizi Ramli said PKR was reviewing its candidate for Sungai Buloh after Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was announced as BN’s candidate for the constituency last night.

At a press conference in Klang, Selangor today, Anwar (above, right) said Harapan’s candidate list is finalised.

“As it stands, that (Harapan candidate list) is done. But of course, I will consult DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, in case (they want to revise).

“But I don’t see that there are going to be some minor changes in light of the announcement by BN,” he said.

Loke (above, left), who also attended the press conference, concurred that DAP’s candidate list is also finalised.

“At this point in time, we are finalised in terms of candidates,” he said.

PKR earlier said it will field its deputy information chief R Ramanan for Sungai Buloh, the first time he will be contesting in a general election.

Ramanan was the MIC treasurer-general but stepped down in 2014 after the Kuala Lumpur High Court instructed him to return the RM5.5 million he obtained through fraud.

At the time, he reportedly said he was appealing the decision and was willing to pay the amount to the plaintiff.

PKR's R Sivarasa has held Sungai Buloh since 2008.

He won with a majority of 26,634 votes in 2018, a similar margin as in the previous election, despite the political tsunami in GE14.

In 2018, Sungai Buloh was a mixed seat, with 66 percent Malay voters, 22 percent Chinese voters, 11 percent Indian voters and two percent voters of other ethnicities.

This is the first time Khairy is contesting in Sungai Buloh after he made way for Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan in Rembau - a seat the health minister held for three terms.
