Zahid: We're not like them, we don't win polls and drop charges

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has lashed out at his political rivals whom he accused of peddling slander with regard to the purported letter of undertaking that Umno candidates had to sign.

Without mentioning Pakatan Harapan, the Umno president said: “They think BN is like them, dropping the court cases against their leaders right after winning the 14th general election and forming the government.”

This was an obvious reference to DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng, who was granted a full acquittal in September 2018 from two graft charges over the alleged conversion of state land status and the purchase of a bungalow at below-market value.

In 2020, after the collapse of the Harapan government, Lim was hauled to court again over the Penang undersea tunnel project. The case is ongoing.

Meanwhile, Zahid, who is also facing corruption charges, said after the change of government in 2018, BN leaders who were faithful to the coalition were “oppressed” while those who danced to “their” tune were accommodated.

“This is the reason we believe BN’s rivals are afraid of their own shadow.

“Alarmed because of ‘overthinking’ about what they did (when in power). Worried that ‘what you give, you get back’,” he added in a Facebook post today. 

According to the purported letter of undertaking, candidates pledged to support Zahid as the prime minister candidate, back an alliance with other parties to form government, and support the dropping of charges and investigations against Umno leaders.

Umno leaders have dismissed the viral document as fake, with information chief Shahril Hamdan listing four reasons for this.

Meanwhile, Zahid urged his adversaries to end this “politics of deceit”.

“Perhaps in the past, they could lie and hoodwink the people with such tactics. But Malaysians are more rational now and can understand the difference between truth and falsehood.

“This latest slander is a clear and concrete reason why the people should reject ‘them’,” he added.

Zahid cautioned Malaysians would witness a “repeat of the lies” after the last general election if the nation is administered by a government “built on a foundation of slander” again.
