Once allies, PAS now reaches for the morality card to derail Anwar

GE15 | As Malaysia approaches the final lap of the parliamentary election campaign, PAS has switched gears by drawing attention to Anwar Ibrahim’s allegedly tainted past.

Speaking at the Jelajah PN Best ceramah series in Tambun, Perak last night, Kedah PAS chief Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor reminded voters that Anwar was twice convicted and was thus “morally bankrupt”.

“I used to sympathise with him, I pitied him (for what he went through) when be was convicted the first time,” Sanusi (above) told some 600 people.

“We could argue that it was political persecution or conspiracy then.

“But it happened again a second time, not only that, he was found guilty by the high court. He is out of ‘akhlak’ (morals).”

In 1999, Anwar was jailed for corruption. The subsequent year, he was jailed for sodomy. Anwar served the entirety of his sentence for corruption but won his appeal on the sodomy charge.

In 2012, Anwar was acquitted of another sodomy charge. However, subsequent appeals by prosecutors led to the overturning of the acquittal and his jailing.

However, he was granted a full pardon in 2018 for all the convictions.

Meanwhile, Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria echoed Sanusi by urging voters to reject Anwar because of his past criminal records.

“Does Tambun want an ex-convict (as their MP)? What was he put in prison for?

“Perakians must make sure to bury the Pakatan Harapan chairperson in Tambun,” he said.

Anwar is Harapan’s candidate for the Tambun seat. He will be facing incumbent Ahmad Faizal Azumu of Perikatan Nasional and two others.
