Perak portfolios: BN takes finance, Harapan gets infrastructure

The portfolios for the Perak state government line-up are out with important jobs being distributed between BN and Harapan.

This further consolidates the Harapan-BN government in the state, while the situation in Pahang and Putrajaya is in flux.

The breakdown of Perak portfolios is as follows:

Saarani Mohamad (BN) - Menteri besar, Islamic affairs, security, land, natural resources, economic planning and GLCs;

Mohd Zolkafly Harun (BN) - Rural development, commodities, agriculture and food industries;

Nizar Jamaluddin (Harapan) - Infrastructure, energy, water and public transportation;

A Sivanesan (Harapan) - Human resources, health and Indian affairs;

Loh Sze Yee (Harapan) - Tourism, industries, investments and corridor development;

Salbiah Mohamed (BN) - Women, family, and community development and entrepreneur development;

Teh Kok Lim (Harapan) - Science, environment and green technology;

Sandrea Ng (Harapan) - Housing and local government;

Khairudin Abu Hanipah (BN) - Education, higher education and youth and sports

Mohd Azlan Helmi Helmi (Harapan) - Communications, multimedia and NGOs; and

Woo Kah Leong (Harapan) - Domestic trade, cooperatives, consumerism and Chinese new villages.

A glance at the distribution of portfolios indicates that BN is seeking to retain its influence in rural communities, while Harapan took on portfolios that are more relevant to urban areas.

However, matters that contribute to the state's economy are shared between the two coalitions.

The BN-Harapan government was formed on Monday after the state legislature was hung following last Saturday's election.

BN won nine seats, Harapan had 24 and PN won 26 seats.

Harapan sealed the deal by offering BN the menteri besar post, which the latter agreed to.

It is the first coalition state government of its kind in the country.

Previously, hung state legislatures were resolved through defections - which is now prevented due to the anti-hopping law.

However, it should be noted that Perak has not yet amended its state constitution to enact anti-hopping rules in line with federal amendments.
